Alternative Energy Research: What Can Be Achieved Through It

If we are to count on the continued survival of our species on this planet then alternative energy research is absolutely crucial. We have fueled our economic growth with fossil fuel energy based sources since the start of the Industrial Revolution. Coal and oil have been the basis of our entire economic and cultural development. These methods have to change, and change quickly, otherwise we are going to be facing an extremely serious crisis. We need to work to develop new energy sources which are renewable and clean. We also need to do this while there still is enough traditional fuels to make the change.

Traditional fuels are quickly running out, and continuing to burn what we have left is causing our environment serious damage. We now have no option but to develop sustainable alternatives that will not produce damaging by products, and will continue to energize us long into the future. The importance of renewable energy technologies is no longer debatable. All the major governments are now starting the push to develop these sources. With this backing there may be enough to provide financial incentive for continuing development.

There are several cutting edge technology companies that are carrying out alternative energy research. All eyes are on the spectacular financial gains that they could be making in the future. This research can be divided into two separate areas, there is the need to develop small scale energy equipment for domestic use alongside huge global projects which will need international cooperation to bring to fruition. This combination is what will serve us best in the future.

Alternative energy research has gained the most press coverage is solar photovoltaic technology and solar energy. This is not surprising as many of the most innovative companies are based in Southern California which has the ideal climate for solar power. The potential for this technology is unlimited, with vast areas of the globe able to use it effectively. The entire needs of the world's energy could be met by solar power alone, however, the best result will be achieved by combining it with other sources. As an example, wind power is extremely effective in areas where solar power is less suitable.

The far north of the earth has little sunshine and cold temperatures, however, their supply of wind resources is often very high, especially when it is moved offshore. If global energy projects worked with wind power in these regions and allied with solar power in the hot tropical regions, like Africa and South America, we have the potential of supplying the world with more than enough energy to sustain worldwide development. Add on to this the capability of hydrogen to use as a energy storage facility , and you see that the possibility is already here. Using technologies which already exist and concentrating on solving the world's energy crisis will be the eventual result of all current alternative energy research.
